TVF&R Chief Jeff Johnson Announces Retirement‏

Date: March 17, 2010 12:05:31 PM PDT
Subject: My Retirement/New Fire Chief

Last night the TVF&R Board of Directors took action on two issues that will impact our organization in the months ahead.

First, I submitted—and our Board accepted—my Fire Chief Separation Agreement. This agreement formalizes my intent to retire as TVF&R’s Fire Chief effective August 31, 2010. This action is the culmination of a succession plan that began many years ago in anticipation of the retirements of TVF&R’s executive staff. Since that time the District has been promoting and integrating individuals to key positions to ensure continuity of leadership and organizational success.

On that note, our Board’s second action last night was to appoint TVF&R Deputy Chief Mike Duyck as TVF&R’s Fire Chief effective September 1, 2010. I could not be more excited about the Board’s decision and trust in Mike Duyck’s ability to lead TVF&R. Since July 2009 Chief Duyck has been responsible for the command and administration of TVF&R in my absence while serving as IAFC President. His 15 years of service with TVF&R includes all ranks within Emergency Services from Firefighter to Deputy Chief. He also has experience on the support side of the organization including logistics, fleet services, human resources, and governmental affairs.

Between now and September 1st, the Board of Directors will work to finalize the terms of a contract with Chief Duyck, and the District will continue the steps of a smooth and orderly transition. During that time, I will retain command and control of TVF&R, while Chief Duyck continues to manage all day-to-day operations. As September nears, we will make the details of a formal ceremony known.

It has been my greatest honor to have served 15 years as the Fire Chief of one of the nation’s top fire and rescue agencies. I could not be more excited about the Board’s decision and trust in Chief Duyck’s ability to lead TVF&R’s next generation of firefighters and staff. I have no doubt that he and his team will take TVF&R to the next level of excellence and innovation.

Best Regards,

Chief Jeff Johnson
